House rules generator

Turn on the rules that apply to your place, pick an option on each card, and choose the language your guest reads. You get polite, clearly worded house rules for the house manual and a short version for your listing's rules field, ready to copy. Covers quiet hours, smoking, visitors, durian and more.

How it works

Each card is one rule with a few common options. The wording for every option is written in advance in English, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Thai, so the guest version reads naturally rather than like a machine translation. Times are written the way each language writes them, such as 2:00 pm, 14:00, 14.00 or 14:00 น.

You get two versions. The full one has a short welcome, numbered rules and a closing line, for the house manual or a guidebook. The short one keeps one line per rule for the house rules field on your listing.

These rules are for the listing and the house manual, not for printed signs. Put every rule a guest is expected to follow in the listing itself, so they see it before they book.

Questions hosts ask

Where should house rules go?

In the listing's house rules section, so guests agree to them when they book, and in the house manual or guidebook for the stay. Signs in the home should not add rules that aren't already in the listing.

Can I charge for lost keys?

You can state a replacement cost in your rules; the amount is yours to set. Check your platform's damage and fee policies before relying on it, because collecting charges works differently on each channel.

Do I need to collect guests' passports or ID?

In several countries in the region, hosts may be required to register guests with the local authorities. Rules differ by country and city, so check what applies to your property; the wording here only asks politely and says what the ID is used for.

Why a rule about durian?

The smell soaks into curtains and bedding and can take days to clear, which can cost you the next booking. Many hotels and apartments in Southeast Asia ask guests not to bring it in.
