Phones understand a short text format for Wi-Fi: the security type, the network name, the password and whether the network is hidden. The tool writes that text and turns it into a QR code with medium error correction, so it still scans when the print is a little scratched or creased.
Characters that the format uses as separators — backslash, semicolon, comma, colon and double quote — are escaped, so names like “Floor 3; Room A” still work. Vietnamese, Thai and other non-Latin names are encoded as UTF-8, which iPhone and Android cameras read.
The code is drawn on this page with JavaScript. Nothing you type is put in the address bar, saved, measured or sent to a server, so the password stays on your device.
Updated
iPhones on iOS 11 or later and most Android phones from the last few years join straight from the camera app. Older Android phones may need Google Lens or the QR scanner in quick settings.
The old code stops working, because the password is inside it. Make a new code and replace every printed copy the same day.
A separate guest network on your router is safer: guests get internet without reaching your cameras, smart locks or computers. Most routers sold in the last few years offer one.
No. This page has no analytics and makes no network requests with what you type. Close the tab and the password is gone.
